Family Bythitidae

Family Bythitidae

by. Nolvyhindarto,S.Si_Encartablog_Animals

Livebearing Brotulas

Selected Characters: Body elongate; dorsal and anal fins long, separate from caudal fin; pelvic fins filamentous; snout blunt; mouth large.

Members of this family are found from shallow to deep water in the world's oceans, particularly in the tropics; a few are found in brackish or fresh water. As the common name of the family indicates, they give live birth; more specifically, they are ovoviviparous. There are at least 90 species recognized in the family, but only one is known from Puget Sound. The secretive Red Brotula typically dwells in caves and crevices at depths from 50 to 200 meters. Although it is moderately common in the Sound, this species is not often encountered.
